Alternative Medicine Gaining Respect

Alternative medicine can be defined as a practice of healing that does not fall within the realm of consistent Western medicine. Examples include but are certainly not limited to homeopathy, biofeedback, acupuncture, herbal supplements and so on.

While alternative health medicine has endured much disdain from those practicing traditional Western medicine, these days more attention is being paid and more respect is being given to complementary alternative medicine, commonly abbreviated as CAM. In today's modern society many nurses and doctors are studying both traditional medicine and alternative medicine so the two may be integrated.

If you are new to alternative complementary medicine, it is first important to understand that the very word complementary means you would use the alternative treatment in addition to any doctor prescribed medicines or treatments, under his or her supervision. It is important to inform your doctor that you are taking any herbal supplements of any kind if you are already on prescription or over the counter medication. Some herb medicine interactions can be quite dangerous, for example taking SSRI antidepressants with St. John's Wort may cause a life threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome.

It is helpful to understand the various disciplines of medicine alternative treatments before diving in with both feet. Homeopathy, for example, is based on the principle that an extremely diluted amount of what ails the patient can cure. There is no scientific explanation of how homeopathy can work but many people claim that it does and many homeopathic remedies are sold around the world. Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into vital areas on the body's meridian or energy systems to stimulate the desired effect. Many people say acupuncture works for everything from weight loss to smoking cessation.

Another type of alternative medicine that is very popular today is massage. Many people get massages without realizing the therapeutic benefits they may be receiving. Massages may incorporate aromatherapy, yet another type of alternative healing. Deep tissue massage may work to help release trigger points, or knotted muscle mass, under the skin. And the presence of fragrance can work to invigorate, relax, cheer up – it all depends on what scent you use for the mood you want to invoke. The types of alternative healing described in this article are only a fraction of the various methods that are available.
